The United Nations and the World Health Organization have designated December 27 as International Epidemic Preparedness Day.
The day was first commemorated in December of last year when the United Nations General Assembly emphasised the need of advocating for epidemic preparedness, prevention, and collaboration.
According to a WHO statement, the urgent need is to invest in systems that can detect, prevent, and respond to outbreaks that have the potential to disrupt health systems, supply chains, and livelihoods, particularly in the poorest countries.
The United Nations also aims to promote the One Health strategy, which encourages the integration of plant, human, and animal health, as well as other important sectors.
