The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty was observed on October 17, 2025, emphasizing that poverty is more than lack of income, it involves dignity, justice and social inclusion. India has made notable progress, lifting around 171 million people out of extreme poverty between 2011 and 2023, reducing rural and urban poverty rates to 2.8% and 1.1%, respectively. The 2025 theme, “Ending social and institutional maltreatment by ensuring respect and effective support for families”, highlights the need for people-centered policies that protect vulnerable families, promote equality, and strengthen social support systems in line with the Sustainable Development Goals.
