International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women is celebrated every year on 25 November.
The United Nations is running 'Unite Campaign' till the year 2030 under the program to eradicate violence against women.
On November 25, 1960, three sisters, Patria Mercedes Mirabell, Maria Argentina Minerva Mirabell and Antonia Maria Teresa Mirabell, who opposed the dictatorship of Dominican ruler Trujillo, were brutally murdered by Trujillo.
Celebrating this day was started in 1981 by supporters of women's rights as a memory of these three sisters.
Later in the year 1999 it was established as an international day by the United Nations.
