  • The United Nations observes International Day for Disarmament and Non-Proliferation Awareness every year on March 5, proclaimed through UN General Assembly Resolution A/RES/77/51, aimed at promoting global understanding of arms control, particularly among young people.
  • Since its founding in 1945, the UN has placed multilateral disarmament at the core of its mission, recognising that controlling nuclear weapons, conventional arms and the illicit small arms trade are essential to preventing conflict and ensuring international peace and security.
  • Emerging threats such as autonomous weapons systems are raising fresh ethical and legal concerns, as these technologies can operate without direct human control, challenging existing frameworks of international humanitarian law and global governance.
  • The day strongly emphasises youth engagement, encouraging educational campaigns, seminars and digital outreach globally to build informed future leadership and greater civic participation in advocating for peaceful conflict resolution and sustainable development.
