The United Nations General Assembly, during its 64th session in December 2009, unanimously adopted Resolution 64/35 declaring August 29 as the International Day against Nuclear Tests. The observance raises global awareness about the devastating effects of nuclear weapon test explosions and advocates for a nuclear-weapons-free world. The resolution, initiated by Kazakhstan, commemorates the closure of the Semipalatinsk Nuclear Test Site on August 29, 1991, and calls for the cessation of all nuclear testing.
