The Indian Navy has commissioned INS Vela, its fourth stealth Scorpene-class submarine under Project 75.
The introduction of the submarine will improve the Navy's combat capability.
Project 75 entails the construction of six Scorpene-class submarines.
Three of these submarines have already been commissioned namely Kalvari, Khanderi, and Karanj.
Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd, based in Mumbai, collaborated with the M/s Naval Group of France to construct the submarine.
The previous incarnation of INS Vela was commissioned on August 31, 1973, and it served the nation admirably for 37 eventful years before being decommissioned on June 25, 2010.
Vela is a diesel-electric-powered attack submarine. It has a length of 67.5 meters and a height of 12.3 meters.
