Brazil has announced that Indonesia has become a full member of the BRICS grouping. Brazil, which chaired the BRICS in 2025, confirmed that Indonesia's candidature was endorsed by the bloc's leaders at the Johannesburg summit in 2023.
As the largest economy and most populous country in Southeast Asia, Indonesia aligns with BRICS members to support global governance reforms and deepen cooperation in the Global South.
BRICS saw significant expansion in 2024, further strengthening the bloc's global influence with the addition of five new countries – Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.
