India has withdrawn its bid to host the 33rd Conference of Parties (COP33) scheduled for 2028.
The decision was formally conveyed to the UNFCCC after reviewing national commitments for 2028.
Preparations, including a dedicated cell by the Ministry of Environment in July 2025 had already begun.
COP hosting rotates among five UN regional groups; South Korea remains the main contender. India’s ambitious climate targets under NDCs continue.
