India will observe Central Excise Day 2026 on 24 February to commemorate the enactment of the Central Excise Act, 1944. The day honours the role of the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) in strengthening tax administration and revenue collection.
The Act unified multiple excise laws and established a structured system for levy and collection of duties in pre-independence India.
Despite the introduction of GST in 2017, Central Excise Duty remains applicable on products such as petroleum and tobacco. The day highlights CBIC’s contributions in customs duty collection, GST implementation and prevention of smuggling, with seminars and awareness programmes organised nationwide.
