India conducted a successful test of the K-4 submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM) from the nuclear-powered submarine INS Arighaat in the Bay of Bengal. With a strike range of 3,500 km and capable of carrying a 2.5-ton nuclear warhead, the DRDO-developed K-4 significantly boosts India’s sea-based nuclear deterrence. Commissioned in 2024, INS Arighaat is India’s second SSBN, following INS Arihant. The K-4, derived from Agni-III, marks a key step in enhancing strategic deterrence alongside future K-5 and K-6 missiles.
