  • Eastern India's first astronomical observatory inaugurated by Satyendra Nath Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences in Garpanchkot hills of Purulia district of West Bengal, which is the sixth astronomical observatory in the country and named after Satyendra Nath Bose.
  • Two telescopes have been installed at this centre and an automatic weather forecasting centre has also been opened. 
  • The centre is located at an altitude of 600 m above sea level so that it is located in a non-polluted area and the time from November to April is considered the most suitable time for better observation.
