  • The Indian Navy will commission the fifth scorpene-class submarine ‘Vagir’ on January 23.
  • The commissioning of the submarine built under the Project-75.
  • The Project-75 includes indigenous construction of six submarines of Scorpene design.
  • The submarines are being constructed at Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) in Mumbai under a collaboration with the Naval Group of France.
  • Notably, the erstwhile Vagir was commissioned on Nov 1 in the year 1973 and undertook numerous operational missions, including deterrent patrols. The submarine was decommissioned on Jan 7 in 2001 after serving India for about three decades.
  • Four of the Kalvari class of submarines have already been commissioned into the Indian Navy.
  • The Navy has already commissioned four Scorpenes, INS Kalvari, INS Khanderi, INS Karanj and INS Vela, till now. The sixth and the last, Vagsheer, will be delivered next year.
