India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) was rolled out in Qatar’s retail shops, inaugurated by Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal at Lulu Hypermarket, Doha. Previously limited to airport duty-free outlets, UPI now enables real-time, secure payments via QR codes at multiple stores. Implemented through NPCI International Payments, Qatar National Bank and NETSTARS, this expansion benefits India’s 830,000-strong diaspora, boosts remittances, and strengthens India-Qatar trade ties.
