India observes Teacher’s Day every year on September 5 to honor the birth anniversary of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, an eminent philosopher, academician, and the second President of India. The celebration began in 1962 when Dr. Radhakrishnan, upon becoming President, suggested that instead of marking his birthday, the day should be dedicated to recognizing teachers’ contributions. Born in 1888, Dr. Radhakrishnan was awarded the Bharat Ratna in 1954 for his contributions to philosophy and education.
