  • The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh accorded Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) for capital acquisition proposals worth ₹70,500 crore.
  • Some of the projects are long-gestation projects involving indigenous design and development including the development of marine diesel engine.
  • The list of purchases approved included 200 additional BrahMos missiles, 50 utility helicopters, and electronic warfare systems for the navy.
  • BrahMos is a supersonic missile with a range of around 300 km that has been jointly developed by India and Russia.
  • All the acquisitions will be undertaken from Indian companies, a majority of them from the public sector.
  • This is the first firm step towards acquisitions, which is followed by the formal tendering process.
  • The focus on the navy, which accounted for approvals worth ₹56,000 crore, comes after India expressed concern last year over Chinese activity in the Indian Ocean.
