The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh accorded Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) for capital acquisition proposals worth ₹70,500 crore.
Some of the projects are long-gestation projects involving indigenous design and development including the development of marine diesel engine.
The list of purchases approved included 200 additional BrahMos missiles, 50 utility helicopters, and electronic warfare systems for the navy.
BrahMos is a supersonic missile with a range of around 300 km that has been jointly developed by India and Russia.
All the acquisitions will be undertaken from Indian companies, a majority of them from the public sector.
This is the first firm step towards acquisitions, which is followed by the formal tendering process.
The focus on the navy, which accounted for approvals worth ₹56,000 crore, comes after India expressed concern last year over Chinese activity in the Indian Ocean.
