  • National Commission for Scheduled Tribes (NCST) Chairman Harsh Chouhan resigned with eight months left for his term to end.
  • Chouhan, a social rights activist who hails from Madhya Pradesh, resigned on June 26. 
  • His resignation was accepted by President Droupadi Murmu. 
  • He was appointed as the chairman of the NCST in February 2021 for a three-year term.
  • Chouhan has worked extensively for tribals in Madhya Pradesh and has been associated with Sangh bodies, including the Akhil Bharatiya Vanvasi Kalyan Ashram.
  • The NCST has now been left with just one member, as the post of Vice Chairperson has remained vacant since July 2019 after Anasuya Uikey was appointed Governor.
  • The chairperson, vice-chairperson and members of the NCST are appointed by the President for three years from the date of assumption of charge.
  • The National Commission for Scheduled Tribes is a constitutional body that was established by the Constitution (89th Amendment) Act, 2003. The Commission is an authority working for the economic development of Scheduled Tribes in India.
