Retired IAS officers Gyanesh Kumar and Sukhbir Singh Sandhu have been appointed as the new Election Commissioners.
The new commissioners were selected by a three-member committee headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and comprising Union Home Minister Amit Shah and leader of Congress in Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury.
Sukhbir Singh Sandhu, a retired IAS officer of Uttarakhand cadre, was earlier the Chief Secretary of Uttarakhand and served as the Secretary of Lokpal on a contract basis. He has also held positions such as the Chairman of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and served in the Ministry of Education.
The Election Commission may soon announce the schedule for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, which are expected to be held in April-May 2024.
