  • Gujarat Day also known as Gujarat Sthapana Divas is celebrated on May 1 every year. 
  • It was on this day in the year 1960 when, according to the Bombay Reorganization Act, the state of Bombay was divided into two states – Maharashtra for the Marathi-speaking population and Gujarat for the Gujarati-speaking population. 
  • Thus, Gujarat became a separate state on this day.
  • Gujarat gets its name from Gujara, the land of Gujjars, as they ruled the area during the 700s and 800s. Gujarat is also called the “Jewel of Western India” and has marked its presence on the global map since ancient times.
  • Freedom fighter and writer K M Munshi originally proposed a concept called Mahagujarat.
  • The plan of Gujarat was first observed in a magazine before a poem by Devshavji Parmar with its title reading ‘Uthtrishta Jagrat’.
