  • Mozambican human rights activist and humanitarian Graca Machel has been selected for the Indira Gandhi Prize for Peace, Disarmament and Development 2025, the Indira Gandhi Memorial Trust announced on Wednesday.
  • The decision was taken by an international jury led by former National Security Adviser Shivshankar Menon.
  • Ms. Machel was honoured for her groundbreaking contributions in education, healthcare, nutrition, economic empowerment, and humanitarian work, carried out under challenging conditions. The award includes a cash prize of ₹1 crore, a citation, and a trophy.
  • The Trust described her as a prominent African leader and human rights champion, noting that her life’s work has focused on self-determination and safeguarding vulnerable communities.
