Mozambican human rights activist and humanitarian Graca Machel has been selected for the Indira Gandhi Prize for Peace, Disarmament and Development 2025, the Indira Gandhi Memorial Trust announced on Wednesday.
The decision was taken by an international jury led by former National Security Adviser Shivshankar Menon.
Ms. Machel was honoured for her groundbreaking contributions in education, healthcare, nutrition, economic empowerment, and humanitarian work, carried out under challenging conditions. The award includes a cash prize of ₹1 crore, a citation, and a trophy.
The Trust described her as a prominent African leader and human rights champion, noting that her life’s work has focused on self-determination and safeguarding vulnerable communities.
