  • The government chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved the extension of the sugar subsidy scheme for 2 years till March 2026.
  • Under the scheme, a subsidy of ₹18.50 per kg will be given on monthly sugar supply to AAY families.
  • The scheme will be applicable for supply of sugar by the government to 1.89 crore AAY families through PDS by March 2026.
  • The maximum benefit estimated under the scheme is Rs 1,850 crore during the 15th Finance Commission period (2020-21 to 2025-26).
  • This scheme is to facilitate access to sugar, especially to the poor so that their health can improve.
