  • German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier was re-elected for a second term of five years by a special parliamentary assembly.
  • Steinmeier had been endorsed by most mainstream political parties ahead of the election for the largely ceremonial head of state.
  • The position of president in Germany is largely symbolic, but its holder is nonetheless the country’s highest authority.
  • Prior to his first election as president in 2017, Steinmeier was served twice as foreign minister under Merkel, and also as her vice chancellor from 2007 to 2009.
