  • New Zealand's Georgina Beyer, who was the world's first openly transgender Member of Parliament (MP), passed away in hospice care at 65. 
  • Beyer was LGBTQ rights advocate and a former sex worker, actor and drag queen. 
  • She was elected to New Zealand's national Parliament in 1999 and had also served as the Mayor of the town of Carterton.
  • In 2020, Beyer was made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to the rainbow community.
