It's the first time an Asian person has broken into the top three of the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.
With a $137.4 billion fortune, Mr Adani has overtaken Louis Vuitton chairman France's Bernard Arnault and now trails just Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos of the US in the ranking.
The group now owns India's largest private-sector port and airport operator, city-gas distributor and coal miner.
In the latest Bloomberg Billionaires Index, Reliance chief Mukesh Ambani is at number 11 with a total of USD 91.9 billion worth.
The first and second rankers of the index, Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos, currently have a net worth of US$251 billion and US$153 billion, respectively.
