Former Bihar Chief Minister Karpoori Thakur will be given Bharat Ratna. This big announcement has been made on the eve of his birth centenary on 24 January.
Karpoori Thakur is called the messiah of the backwards.
Born in Samastipur, Bihar, Karpoori Thakur was the Chief Minister of Bihar twice. However, he never completed his term.
He is known for clearing the way for reservation for backward classes.
He implemented the recommendations of the Mungeri Lal Commission. For this, he had to sacrifice his government too.
Apart from this, he also made many radical changes in the education system of Bihar.
During his tenure as deputy chief minister, he abolished the requirement of passing English in the matriculation examination.
Karpoori Thakar was also the CM of Bihar twice and the Deputy CM once. He was the first Chief Minister of Bihar who was not from the Congress.
He won the assembly election for the first time in 1952.
He considered Jayaprakash Narayan as an ideal. After becoming a minister in the government in 1970, he announced free education up to the eighth standard. He gave Urdu the status of second official language.
