M Pavri, the former director of the National Institute of Virology in Pune, died at the age of 94.
M Pavri was the NIV's first female director. She was in charge of this position from 1978 to 1988.
She helped lay the groundwork for modern arbovirus clinical and epidemiological research in the country.
She was also an expert in a number of virology diagnostic methods.
She was a member of the Cabinet's Scientific Committee as well as the World AIDS Foundation.
She spent a lot of time researching how the Hepatitis A, B, and E viruses spread and how to diagnose deadly gastrointestinal sickness in infants.
