  • World Seagrass Day is celebrated annually on 1st March to raise awareness about seagrass and its important functions in the marine ecosystem. 
  • The seagrasses are grass-like plants that live close to the sea. They are the only flowering plant to grow in the marine environment. 
  • There are more than 60 seagrass species in the world. They act as the best carbon sink and provide food for marine life.
  • On 23 May 2022, the UN General Assembly (UNGA) proclaimed 1 March as World Seagrass Day, to be observed annually, and invited the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) to facilitate the observance of the Day. 
  • The 2023 celebration will be the first observance of World Seagrass Day.
