Sananta Tanty, the poet who won the Sahitya Akademi Award, died after a long illness in a private hospital in New Delhi.
Sananta Tanty had cancer and had been receiving treatment for it for quite some time.
Sananta Tanty has won numerous prizes and accolades, including the Sahitya Akademi in 2016 for his book of Assamese poems "Kailoir Dinto Amar Hobo" (Tomorrow Will Be Ours).
He began his professional career in 1971 as a member of the Assam Tea Employees' Provident Fund Organization in Jorhat, and he retired in 2012 as the Deputy Provident Fund Commissioner.
