The fourth Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay NIF Book Prize 2021 was awarded to Dinyar Patel for Naoroji: Pioneer of Indian Nationalism, a biography of one of modern India's most important figures.
The foundation chose Patel's work from a shortlist of six nonfiction books about India that covered a wide range of themes and issues.
Dinyar Patel is an assistant history professor at Mumbai's SP Jain Institute of Management and Research.
The biography is based on the life of Naoroji, a nineteenth-century activist who founded the Indian National Congress.
He was the first Indian-born British Member of Parliament and a role model for Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru. Naoroji was dubbed the "Father of the Nation" by Gandhi, a title that is now reserved for Gandhi himself.
The New India Foundation honors the Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay NIF Book Prize for the best non-fiction book on modern/contemporary India every year since 2018.
