  • February 16 marks the 79th death anniversary of the 'Father of Indian cinema', Dadasaheb Phalke.
  • Phalke died on this day in 1944.
  • Dadasaheb Phalke's movie titled Raja Harishchandra in 1913 is recognised as the first feature film from India.
  • He was a towering figure in the arts and has been hailed as the ‘father of Indian cinema’.
  • He was also a producer, director and screenwriter.
  • The Indian government has named the award for lifetime contribution to Indian cinema the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in his honour.
