CJI NV Ramana Recommends Justice UU Lalit as Next Chief Justice of India

Chief Justice of India NV Ramana has written to the Union Government recommending the name of Justice Uday Umesh Lalit, the second senior judge of the Supreme Court, as the next Chief Justice of India.
CJI Ramana is retiring with effect from August 26. Recently, the Union Minister of Law and Justice Kiren Rijiju had written to the CJI requesting him to name the successor.
If appointed, Justice Lalit will become the second CJI who was directly elevated to the apex court Bench from the Bar council after Justice S M Sikri, who became the 13th CJI in January 1971.
Before his elevation as a judge of the Supreme Court on August 13, 2014, Justice Lalit was a Senior Advocate at the Supreme Court.
