China has completed construction of the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO), while India’s Neutrino Observatory (INO) continues to face delays. Both observatories are designed to study elusive subatomic particles called neutrinos, which rarely interact with matter. The massive size of these facilities increases interaction opportunities, aiding research. INO’s large 50-kilotonne detector required installation inside a mountain in Theni, Tamil Nadu, but the project has stalled, highlighting the challenges of building such complex underground labs compared to JUNO, which is now fully operational.
