Daily Current Affairs / China Achieves World’s First Thorium-to-Uranium Fuel Conversion
Category : Science and Tech Published on: November 06 2025
China successfully completed the world’s first thorium-to-uranium fuel conversion in an active Thorium Molten Salt Reactor (TMSR), announced by the Shanghai Institute of Applied Physics (SINAP). This breakthrough shows the conversion of thorium-232 into fissile uranium-233, marking a step toward cleaner and safer nuclear energy. Thorium, three times more abundant than uranium, ensures efficiency and low waste. China aims to build a 100 MW demonstration reactor by 2035, leading next-gen nuclear innovation.
