The Chhattisgarh government announced that Balod district has become the country’s first district officially declared “child marriage-free.” All 436 gram panchayats and 9 urban bodies in Balod were awarded certificates after no cases of child marriage were reported in the past two years and the verification process was completed. This milestone is part of the national campaign “Child Marriage-Free India” launched on 27 August 2024. Chief Minister Vishnu Dev Sai stated that the goal is to make the entire state child marriage-free by 2028–29, emphasizing that this is not just a government initiative but a commitment to social change. Additionally, 75 gram panchayats in Surajpur district have also been declared child marriage-free. This initiative marks a significant step toward social reform in Balod district and across Chhattisgarh.
