Daily Current Affairs / Cane Toad Turns from Pest Controller to Ecological Threat
Category : Miscellaneous Published on: November 14 2025
The Cane Toad (Rhinella marina), also known as the giant neotropical toad or marine toad, is a large terrestrial species native to South and Central America. It has been introduced to regions such as Australia, Oceania, and the Caribbean, where it has become an invasive species. Recognized by its warty skin and large parotoid glands, it secretes a powerful toxin that can harm or kill predators. Feeding mainly on insects and small animals, its adaptability and toxicity have caused major ecological imbalances in many introduced areas.
