The Shinkun La tunnel, spread for 4.1 km below the vast Shinku-La pass, connects the Lahaul Valley of Himachal with the Zanskar Valley of Ladakh.
As the world's longest high-altitude highway tunnel, it promises year-round connectivity to Ladakh, reducing travel time and enhancing regional reach.
Strategic Defence Initiative: With a budget of Rs. The tunnel, costing Rs 1,681.5 crore, not only streamlines transportation but also acts as an important safety buffer.
Its creation by the Border Roads Organization ensures protection from such as long-range artillery shelling or missile attacks, thereby strengthening defense capabilities in border areas.
