The Bornean elephant (Elephas maximus borneensis), the smallest subspecies of Asian elephants, is now classified as Endangered on the IUCN Red List due to a significantly dwindling population of around 1,000 individuals.
These elephants inhabit the forests of Borneo and Sumatra, facing severe threats from habitat loss caused by logging and oil palm plantations, which have led to a drastic reduction in their numbers.
Bornean elephants are distinguished by their smaller size compared to mainland Asian elephants, with males growing to approximately 2.5 meters in height, whereas mainland Asian elephants reach about 3 meters.
