On August 5, 2024, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned after 15 years in power and abruptly left Bangladesh along with her sister. This led to a significant change in the political scenario of the country.
Bangladesh Army chief General Waqar-uz-Zaman said the army will form an interim government.
The main issue of student protests in Bangladesh in 2024 was the 30% reservation in government jobs for relatives of freedom fighters, which the students argued was discriminatory and favoured by supporters of Sheikh Hasina's Awami League party.
