India has confirmed the rediscovery of the bamboo shrimp Atyopsis spinipes in Karnataka and Odisha, seven decades after it was last recorded. Surveys by the Centre for Climate Change Studies traced the species to mangrove-lined, sandy waterways. Genetic analysis corrected earlier misidentifications. As an amphidromous filter-feeder, it highlights India’s hidden freshwater diversity, now threatened by sand mining and habitat loss. Researchers warn that aquarium-trade demand may further pressure wild populations, stressing the need for protection.
