  • The Andhra Pradesh government has abolished the two-child norm that previously restricted individuals with more than two children from contesting local body elections.
  • This decision was made due to the declining fertility rate in the state, which made the existing restriction less relevant.
  • The Cabinet approved the repeal of amendments made in 1994 to the Andhra Pradesh Municipal Corporation Act 1955 and the Andhra Pradesh Municipalities Act 1965, which had barred individuals with more than two children from urban local body elections.
