The Ministry of Home Affairs has extended the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958 (AFSPA) for another six months starting October 1, 2025, in parts of Manipur, Nagaland, and Arunachal Pradesh due to ongoing ethnic violence and security challenges. AFSPA gives special powers to armed forces in “disturbed areas” to maintain law and order, allowing them to conduct searches, arrests without warrants, and use force when necessary. The law empowers armed forces to conduct searches, make arrests without warrants, and use force in disturbed areas, making it one of the most controversial yet persistent security measures in the Northeast.
