Karnataka has recorded its first case of Zika virus.
A five-year-old girl from Raichur district was infected with the Zika virus and has tested positive.
This is the first case in the state and the government is monitoring the situation very carefully.
The Zika virus disease is transmitted through the bite of an infected Aedes mosquito, which is also known to transmit infections like Dengue and Chikungunya. The virus was first identified in Uganda in 1947.
For the majority of people, Zika virus infection is not a serious issue. But it can be very dangerous among pregnant women, especially for foetuses. The infection can cause microcephaly (a brain disability condition) or other conditions called congenital Zika syndrome.
