Category : Awards Published on: October 08 2025
The 2025 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine has been awarded to Mary E. Brunkow (USA), Fred Ramsdell (USA), and Shimon Sakaguchi (Japan) for their groundbreaking work on regulatory T cells (Tregs), which prevent the immune system from attacking the body. Sakaguchi discovered Tregs in 1995, revealing peripheral immune tolerance, while Brunkow and Ramsdell identified the Foxp3 gene in 2001, linking its mutations to autoimmune diseases like IPEX syndrome. The discoveries are crucial for understanding autoimmune disorders, cancer immunotherapy, and organ transplantation, transforming modern immunology and medical treatments.
