The Translational Health Science and Technology Institute (THSTI) under the Biotechnology Research and Innovation Council (BRIC) successfully hosted the third edition of its flagship industry meet, SYNCHN 2026, on July 14, 2026, at the NCR Biotech Science Cluster in Faridabad. The event underscores a maturing strategic focus by India’s premier translational research institutions on converting scientific breakthroughs into commercially viable healthcare solutions.

 

Momentum in Academia-Industry Collaboration

A standout feature of the event is the clear trajectory of outcomes. The first edition (SYNCHN 2024) yielded 13 Letters of Intent, while the 2025 edition produced 19 binding strategic agreements. This progression reflects growing industry confidence in THSTI’s platforms and a shift from exploratory discussions to enforceable partnerships.

Dr. Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, Chief Guest and Executive Chairperson of Biocon, highlighted a core challenge in her address: India excels in discovery science but struggles with translation. She positioned platforms like SYNCHN as essential for building the missing ecosystem of trust, infrastructure, and cross-boundary collaboration, especially in an era where Biology, Biotechnology, and AI converge.

Prof. Ganesan Karthikeyan, Executive Director of THSTI, reinforced this by emphasizing outcomes over outputs. Key institutional strengths showcased include:

  • The Medical Research Centre (MRC) with early-phase clinical trial capabilities, an advanced CAR-T cell research unit, and India’s first Controlled Human Infection Studies (CHIS) facility.
  • The Accelerated Productisation and Epidemic Preparedness (APEX) initiative, featuring a national-scale pilot production platform designed to close the “valley of death” between lab validation and manufacturable biologics.

These facilities position THSTI as a critical de-risking partner for industry and startups.

 

Policy and Financial Tailwinds

The summit featured strong participation from regulators and policymakers, indicating alignment across government arms:

  • Rajeev Singh Raghuvanshi (Drugs Controller General of India) discussed evolving regulatory frameworks for biologics that incorporate industry experts.
  • M. Srinivas (NITI Aayog) stressed the need for affordable, scalable solutions through stronger clinical-research linkages.
  • Manish Diwan highlighted the newly operational BIRAC Research Development and Innovation (RDI) Fund to address lifecycle funding gaps.

This macro environment—backed by over 11,000 biotech startups and a bioeconomy that has grown from ~$10 billion in 2014 to $195 billion in 2025—provides fertile ground for translational efforts.
