World Thalassemia Day is observed every year on May 8. The 2026 theme is ‘Hidden No More: Finding the Undiagnosed. Supporting the Unseen.’ It focuses on identifying undiagnosed patients and ensuring timely treatment. Thalassemia is an inherited blood disorder causing severe anaemia. India has over 1 lakh patients and 40 lakh carriers. Prevention through genetic counselling, prenatal screening (CVS & Amniocentesis), and awareness is crucial. The day honours patients and promotes better healthcare access and blood transfusion support.
