The US announces to boycott 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics

  • The United States has declared a diplomatic boycott of the Winter Olympics in Beijing, China, in 2022.
  • It was announced by the White House that no official delegation would be sent to the Games due to concerns about China's human rights record.
  • The last time the US boycotted the Olympics was in 1980 when President Jimmy Carter rallied against permitting athletes to compete in the Summer Games in Moscow in protest of the Soviet Union's military engagement in Afghanistan.
