The UN has named Telangana Village as one of the "Best Tourism Villages"

  • The United Nations World Tourism Organization named Telangana's Pochampally village as one of the best tourism villages (UNWTO).
  • Pochampally is a village in the Yadadri Bhuvanagiri district famous for its hand-woven Ikat saris.
  • Pochampally Ikat was designated a Geographical Indicator (GI) in 2004 and is also known as Bhoodan Pochampally to commemorate Acharya Vinobha Bhave's Bhoodan movement, which began on April 18, 1951, from this village.
  • The UNWTO pilot initiative 'Best Tourism Villages' aims to award villages that are outstanding examples of rural destinations and demonstrate best practices in accordance with its specified nine evaluation areas.
  • It also aims to support villages to enhance their rural tourism potential through training and access to opportunities for improvement.
  • The award will be presented on December 2nd, at the 24th session of the United Nations World Tourism Organization's General Assembly in Madrid.
