Odisha government launches the rain water harvesting scheme "CHHATA"

  • The Odisha government has started community harnessing and harvesting of rainwater artificially from Terrace to Aquifer (CHHATA) scheme, aimed at rejuvenating and improving water resources, groundwater.
  • It was recently approved by the state cabinet with an investment of Rs 270 crore.
  • It has been implemented for a period of five years.
  • Under the scheme, which has been conceptualized to address the increasing stress on groundwater and to improve the depleting groundwater table, a target has been set to harvest 373.52 crore litres of water in five years.
  • The scheme will be implemented in 29,500 Private Buildings and 1,925 Government Buildings covering water-stressed 52 blocks and 27 urban local bodies of the State
  • There is a subsidy provision of Rs 55,000 or 50% of the cost of the RRHS, whichever is less in this scheme to encourage the public for adopting the scheme in their buildings.
