Nitu Ghanghas, Saweety Bora become boxing world champions

  • Boxers Nitu Ghanghas and Saweety Boora etched their names in history books, becoming the world champions in their respective weight categories in the ongoing Women's World Boxing Championships in the national capital.
  • While the 22-year-old Nitu outclassed Mongolia's Lutsaikhan Altansetseg in the 48 kg final, registering a dominating 5-0 win, in the 81 kg category, Saweety won the gold via a split-verdict. 
  • In the final, Saweety registered a 4-3 win over China's Wang Lina.
  • With the wins, Nitu and Saweety became India's sixth and seventh boxers respectively (male or female) to win world championship gold.
  • India now have a total of 12 Women's World Boxing Championships gold medals with legendary MC Mary Kom winning six of them.
  • The two join an elite list which includes Mary Kom (2002, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2010 and 2018), Sarita Devi (2006), Jenny RL (2006), Lekha KC (2006) and Nikhat Zareen (2022).
  • The IBA World Boxing Championships, and the IBA Women's World Boxing Championships, are biennial boxing competitions.
  • This is organised by the International Boxing Association (IBA), which is the sport governing body.
