New Seahorse Species Identified by KUFOS Researchers

  • Researchers from the Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies identified a new seahorse species in August 2026 and named it Hippocampus amandavincentae after marine biologist Amanda Vincent. The species was first collected from fish bycatch at Tuticorin fisheries harbour in Tamil Nadu.
  • The study, published in Zootaxa, showed that the thorny seahorse previously treated as Hippocampus histrix actually comprises three distinct species. It also confirmed Hippocampus jayakari as a valid separate species. The Kerala coast now has five known seahorse species.
