  • New fern species Pteris madhusoodananii described on 30 July 2026 in Nordic Journal of Botany.
  • Endemic to Kolli Hills, Eastern Ghats, Tamil Nadu.
  • Preliminary IUCN assessment: Critically Endangered.
  • Described by a team including K.S. Abhilash, A.A. Philip, T.S. Gayathri and others from Government Victoria College and affiliated institutions.
  • Features stiff, leathery, lustrous deep-green leaves; distinct pinna-pinnule architecture and basal lobe.
  • Spores show narrow, wavy-edged cingulum (SEM studies).
  • Known from only two small sites (~8 sq km) in unprotected areas.
  • The genus Pteris belongs to the family Pteridaceae.
